Facts And Figures About The State Of Distrito Federal

First off, the state of Distrito Federal is not actually a state at all. Brazil has 26 states, and the state of Distrito Federal, like the US's Washington DC, is actually a district rather than a state.

The state of Distrito Federal was created especially to hold the new city of Brasilia and the Brazilian government. A small rectangle of about 6,000 square kilometers was carved out of the state of Goias. This was to be the new capital of the nation of Brazil. Prior to the construction of Brasilia, the state of Distrito Federal was a municipality of the city of Rio.

The Location Of The State Of Distrito Federal

The Distrito Federal is located in Brazil's middle-west. Here, in the central part of Brazil's interior, it is drier and temperatures are more moderate than in other areas. The spot for the state of Distrito Federal was chosen because it was the geographical center of the country. One reason why city founder Juscelino Kubitschek chose this spot was that he wanted to help develop the economy of Brazil's interior.

The state of Distrito Federal is inside the state of Goias. Goias borders Mato Grosso to the west, and Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais to the south and southeast. Goias borders a tiny portion of the state of Bahia on its northwest border, and to the north is Toncantins.

How The State Of Distrito Federal Is Divided

Unlike other urban areas of Brazil, which are split up into municipalities based on population, the Federal District has 19 administrative regions. Brasilia is not actually an independent city, but one of these regions. Some people confuse the Federal District with Brasilia, but actually Brasilia is one administrative region within the District. The others include Taguatinga, Ceilandia, Samambaia and Guara, just to name a few of the biggest.

Population And Economy

The population of the Federal District is around 3 million people. The population density is a little over 400 people per square kilometer, making it one of the most heavily populated urban areas of Brazil.

The state of Distrito Federal is the political center of Brazil, but not a great economic power. The Federal District's economy makes up only about 3% of the nation's whole economy. The largest sector of the Federal District's economy is the service industry.

Attractions Of The Federal District

The biggest attraction outside of the administrative region of Brasilia is Brasilia National Park. It is famous for its natural beauty, hiking trails, flora and fauna, and two large mineral water ponds. Visitors can bathe in these lakes, and they are said to have healing properties and overall health benefits.

Nearby is also the Mumunhas waterfall, one of Brazil's great waterfalls. Brasilia National Park and Mumunhas waterfall are both located within the Cafuringa Environmental Protection Area.
