The city of Brasilia was originally built for 500,000 people. It was expected that government employees, dignitaries, civil servants and their families would be the residents of the city. But, something unexpected happened. Many recent immigrants to Brasilia came to the site to work on building the city, and when the city was completed, they stayed. These residents make up Brasilia's satellite cities.

Now, the Brasilia area has more than 2 million residents. The city itself has about 300,000 residents, and the outlying suburbs have more than 1.5 million. This means that the city itself is actually smaller than the suburbs.

The Satellite Cities Of Brasilia

These cities are not actually cities, but districts within Brasilia. They are really Brasilia neighbourhoods, even though they may be a little far flung from the city. All that separates them from the city are green empty spaces.

There are 16 satellite cities, and every few years new ones pop up, to accommodate the city's growing population. The oldest satellite city was Nucleo Bandeirante, but it is now one of the smaller ones. The bigger satellite cities are Ceilandia (also the closest to Brasilia proper), Taguatinga, and Samambaia. Other sizable satellite cities include Planaltina, Guara, and Cruzeiro.

What To Do In Brasilia Neighbourhoods

As you walk around and take in the sights in the city, you'll notice one thing conspicuously missing. Brazil is known for its vibrant street culture, and this is one of the major attractions to Brazilian cities like Rio and Sao Paulo. In the city of Brasilia, you won't see much of that. You have to get out into the Brasilia neighbourhoods to experience Brasilia street life.

In these Brasilia neighbourhoods, you'll find markets and festivals, just like you would see in Rio or Sao Paulo. You'll also find a variety of authentic ethnic restaurants. These Brasilia neighborhoods are where the majority of the city's ethnic population lives.

In some of the closer Brasilia neighbourhoods like Ceilanda and Taguatinga you'll also find great hotel deals. If you want to save a little cash on your lodging, you can always find an affordable place to stay just outside of the central part of the city.

How To Get To The Satellite Cities

Brasilia is a city designed for cars, but it also has a great mass transit system. The Brasilia bus system is great for getting around inside the city, with the central hub bus station making it convenient to get anywhere. But, to get to the outlying Brasilia neighbourhoods, you have to take Brasilia metro.

Brasilia metro goes from the center of the city to the southwest satellite cities of Guara, Aguas Claras, Samabaia, Taguatinga and Ceilandia. Here is a Brasilia metro map.

Once you get to the main stations, each satellite city has its own bus system. The Brasilia subway does not go everywhere, but it is remarkably clean and efficient.
