Explore The History Of Money At The Brasilia Museum De Valores
The Brasilia Museum de Valores (the Brasilia Museum of Money) is located in the Banco Central do Brasil. Brasilia's cultural attractions and museums are all about progress, and how far human civilization has come. The Brasilia Museum de Valores is all about money and the banking industry of Brazil, which is centered in the nation's capital of Brasilia.
The Central Bank decided to create the Brasilia Museum de Valores in August of 1966. This was in the early days of Brasilia, when all the brand new modern buildings were being turned into museums and sightseeing attractions. The name itself does not translate directly to "museum of money." What it really means, is "museum of values." The idea was that the museum should not be just about money, but about wealth and valuables.
The Brasilia Museum de Valores was opened to the public in 1972. Now, it is located in the bank itself, in an area of the ground floor that was once part of the bank's facilities.
The museum contains all kinds of things from the economic history of Brazil. Most of the artifacts and exhibits were brought from the original Brazil money museum that was located in Rio. The museum now has around 125,000 items in its collection, including minted valuables, financial documents, old bank notes and coins, gold items and the original drawings of the Brazilian currency. The coin collection contains commemorative coins from certain eras, as well as coins from throughout Brazil's history.
They also have a foreign coin collection which contains old coins from many different nations. The oldest coins in the museum are ancient Chinese coins. There are also seals and other items that were used for trade or barter throughout human history. The museum has more than just Brazilian historical money.
You'll also find gold there. The central bank holds all the gold reserves for the country of Brazil, and the Brasilia Museum de Valores displays many gold bars, nuggets and other items made of gold. The centerpiece of the gold collection is a giant gold nugget weighing almost 61 kilograms. It was found in the Brazilian state of Para, and about 52 kilograms of its weight is pure gold.
Aside from educating the public about the economic history of Brazil, the Brasilia Museum de Valores is also active in the community. It works together with the central bank to educate kids in schools, hold exhibits outside of the museum itself, and continue researching, archiving and chronicling the history of Brazilian money.
