Learn About Native Brazil At The Brasilia Memorial Museum Of The Indian People
The Brasilia Memorial Museum of the Indian People is not given the notice it deserves. This museum has a wonderful collection of native Brazilian art and artifacts. Even though it is one of the greatest cultural sights to see in Brasilia, the Brasilia Memorial Museum of the Indian People rarely gets as many reviews as the other major sights in the city. But, by all means it should.
The Brasilia Memorial Museum of the Indian People (or Memorial dos Povos Indigenas, in Portuguese) is a collection of native art and culture from indigenous people all over Brazil. In addition to art made especially for the collection, you will find daily living items like feather headdresses, pottery, baskets, hammocks, nets, spears and paddles. It is one of the best collections of native artifacts in the world, and definitely the best in South America.
The museum was one of many famous buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The Brasilia Memorial Museum of the Indian People is designed to look like a traditional Yanomamo round house. In coming up with the design, Niemeyer consulted Yanomamo shamans and elders to make sure it was as true to life as possible. The result is a remarkable, distinctive building.
The Brasilia Memorial Museum of the Indian People is of great interest to any traveler who wants to know about the native people who lived in Brazil before the Europeans come. These traditions are still alive today, and the Brasilia Memorial Museum of the Indian People often has presentations and visitors to educate the public about native ways of living.
The museum was originally built in the 1960's to show native art. After Niemeyer designed the building and it was constructed, the powers that be in Brasilia decided instead to turn it into an art museum to show European-Brazilian art. People were outraged, but the plans went ahead. When the art museum failed, it was returned to a museum for native people.
Now, the museum is a memorial to a vibrant tradition that continues to thrive. In addition to the exhibitions, the Brasilia Memorial Museum of the Indian People also has a cafe and a gift shop, where you can buy handmade native crafts.
It is free to get into the Brasilia Memorial Museum of the Indian People. You'll find it right across the street from the Juscelino Kubitschek Memorial, on Eixo Monumental Oeste at the Praca do Buriti. The phone number is (61) 3226-5206.
