One Of The Best Cultural Sights In The City - The Brasilia JK Museum And Memorial

The Brasilia JK Museum And Memorial was built in 1980 to honor Juscelino Kubitschek, the founder of Brasilia. Brasilia is a unique city, because it was created from a vision. Juscelino Kubitschek was the man who laid the foundations for the city, and during his term as president of Brazil, the city of Brasilia went from dream to reality. This is why Kubitschek is regarded by Brazilians as more than just a former president. This is also why the Brasilia JK Museum and Memorial is such a popular tourist destination. It is probably the single most popular cultural attraction in the city of Brasilia.

The Brasilia JK Museum And Memorial is one of Oscar Niemeyer's most distinctive creations. Oscar Niemeyer was the architect chosen by Kubitschek to build most of the major buildings of the city of Brasilia. The design of the building is futuristic and austere, and considered by many to be one of Niemeyer's best works. On the grounds of the memorial are stunning works of art by various 20th century artists and sculptors, including the distinctive pole outside with the mini-sculpture of Kubitschek waving at its top.

On the second floor of the Brasilia JK Museum And Memorial, you'll find Kubitschek's tomb. The tomb where his remains rest is made of solid granite. There is an inscription on the tomb that reads, "O FUNADOR."

You'll also find lots of his things put on display. There are his clothes, suits, ties, eyeglasses, watches, letters, furniture and other assorted daily items. There is also a mini-museum of all the awards, medals and other honors he received during his lifetime. It is something like Juscelino Kubitschek's version of Graceland, and it borders on idolatry. But, that is the kind of figure that Kubitschek was. He was more than just a president of Brazil; to many, he is larger than life.

Upstairs from the tomb, there are more exhibits about the city that Kubitschek founded and created, Brasilia. There are lots of photos and plans for the city laid out, as well as other kinds of various information. The most interesting displays show you plans for the city that were not used. Looking at these exhibits, you can really get an idea of how the city was built, from it's first conception to the inauguration day.

The Brasilia JK Museum And Memorial is located on Eixo Monumental Oeste, right in the middle of town. Admission is free. You can call them at (61) 3225-9451.
