Looking For The Right Brasilia Guide Book - 3 Reviews
Unfortunately, there is no Brasilia guide book that covers only the city of Brazil. Until somebody writes a Brasilia guide book, we'll just have to use what's available. Luckily, there are lots of great Brazil guide books that have chapters on Brasilia. Let's look at a few of these in lieu of a Brasilia guide book.
5 Stars - Frommer's Brazil by Shawn Blore and Alexandra de Vries, Complete Edition, 2006, Frommers
This is the best Brasilia guide book available. First off, Frommers consistently turns out great guide books for destinations all over the world. The name has come to be synonymous with quality. This is because Frommers gives realistic travel advice from people who have been there.
Frommer's doesn't just gush about what's great about everything; it gives you a balanced view of the places you plan to visit. You'll find what's good as well as what's bad about the country you're visiting, and this gives you a good idea of what to expect.
The popular trend in guide books is to show you all the out of the way places that nobody is supposed to know about, and Frommer's delivers. They also give prices and other specific information, like where to find Internet cafes.
The Complete Edition lists the best hotels, restaurants and everything else in Brazil by region. There are big chapters on Rio and Sao Paulo. The Brasilia chapter is one of the smaller ones, but it covers a good 30 pages of the book and is full of detailed, useful information.
4 Stars - Insight Guide Brazil by Pam Barret, 2007, Insight Guides
Insight Guides' Brazil book is not as comprehensive as the Frommer's Complete Edition, but it's still full of useful information. This edition has lots of cultural information about Brazil as well as practical travel information. One of the strengths of Insight Guides is that they provide information for any kind of traveler, whether you want to camp in the backcountry or stay in a nice hotel.
The Brasilia section is just one of the book's many chapters, along with the state of Goia. Although it's not as complete as the Frommer's guide, you'll still find lots of good tips and updated listings for hotels and sightseeing. This is a newer edition than the most recent Frommer's guide.
1 Star - The Rough Guide To Brazil, Rough Guides, 2006
While Rough Guide is known for its good insight into its destinations, and this book has nearly 900 pages of information, it is not the best guide to use for Brasilia. Even though it is so big and comprehensive, the authors seem to feel that Brasilia is not worth visiting, and the writing reflects that. Rough Guides tend to specialize more in small villages and out-of-the-way places rather than major cities.
One good thing about Rough Guides, in addition to the wealth of information, is the maps. This edition has over 70 maps. The Rough Guide for Brazil would be a great book to use for a backpacking tour of the country, but for Brasilia, it should be skipped.
