See Rare Plants And Animals At The Brasilia Botanical Garden.

The Brasilia Botanical Garden was founded in 1985. It is one of Brazil's many botanical parks, where natural flora and fauna are set aside and left untouched. Brazil has many unique species of plants and animals, and the country's many botanical gardens are areas where they can flourish undisturbed.

Brasilia Botanical Garden is an example of the "cerrado" ecosystem (pronounced "se-HA-do"). This kind of climate is a dry woodland, like the savannahs of Africa or the high plains of the American west, but with more trees. The cerrado is also different from these climates because it has seasons.

The park was founded in 1985, but has undergone several major changes in order to keep it as close as possible to a cerrado area in the wild. It is located inside Brasilia's city limits, about 6 miles from the city center. It is in the Dom Bosco Mansions Sector of the city, at the southwest corner of Lake Paranoa. The Brasilia Botanical Garden provides a wonderful natural getaway right in the middle of town.

What Does The Brasilia Botanical Garden Have To Offer?

Brasilia Botanical Garden is a nature reserve with almost 5,000 hectares of wild plants and animals. Approximately 500 hectares, or one-tenth, of this land is open to the public. The rest is closed off to visitors in order to preserve its natural state.

The garden has three purposes - research, education and enjoyment. Biologists come from all over the world to the Brasilia Botanical Gardens to study rare species of plants and animals. There are over 100 native plants that are typical of the cerrado climate, and many of them are near-extinct aromatic and medicinal plants.

You'll also find all kinds of wildlife in the Brasilia Botanical Garden. There's no big game, of course, but there are plenty of exotic birds, little critters and a few oddities. The garden boasts 30 different species of bats! You can find out all about what critters call the cerrado home at the visitors' center.

Things To Do

The visitors' center at Brasilia Botanical Gardens provides information all about the park, Brazil and the cerrado climate. They have English tour guides who can take you on guided walking trails, or you can explore the park at your leisure in the designated areas for visitors. There are several nice picnic areas, as well as a few overlook spots where you can see most of the park.

The landscape design was created by one of the greatest landscape artists of the 20th century, Roberto Burle Marx. This is another one of the park's attractions, and people come from all over to see Marx's work.

The Brasilia Botanical Garden is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 to 5. You can call them at (61) 366-2141 for more information and for entrance fees.
